Rolfing

Rolfing is a therapeutic form of massage that deals with the connection between muscular tension and unexpressed emotions. It’s believed that physical as well as emotional health depends on the body being properly aligned. The body is slowly pulled out of alignment by the stress and tension of every day activities as well as improper posture and the inability to move with grace and fluidity. Rolfing is a massage form that helps the body to become re-aligned.

Rolfing does not focus on your muscles, but rather on their protective layer which is known as connective tissue or fascia. Fascia surrounds all muscles, bones and organs in the body. It gives the muscles their shape and the body its structure. The practice of Rolfing deals with applying pressure to different areas in order to stretch the connective tissue. Stretching leads to re-alignment and stabilization of the body by changing the position of the fascia.

Rolfing works mainly to lengthen the fascia because as it is lengthened, it allows for more effective movement from the bones and muscles. When the body is properly aligned, daily stress and emotions will be less likely to cause tension in the muscles and will ultimately lead to a healthier lifestyle.
